Back when I was doing serious road time, you know, making Platinum Medallion by June, there were a few things that kept me sane.
The tricks of the trade helped by keeping me from stressing at those unplanned events that would drive the unadulterated to madness.
For example:
* Checking the phone book when you couldn’t remember what hotel, in what city, the bed you currently occupied resided
* Setting off the panic alarm to find the rental car in the hotel parking lot you saw for the first time only a few hours ago in the early morning hours
* Having all of the hotels, rental car, and airline phone numbers on speed dial so while everyone else is waiting at the back of a long line, you are actually talking to someone who can make you a reservation
The only personal benefit to the road is that you have hours of confined time where your level of multi-tasking is quite limited. This forces you to actually slow down and enjoy a book or listen to an entire album on your ipod.
If you are a new road warrior, there are three things in which I would invest:
- Travel Club – Pay the fee and go ahead and get access to the Crown Room, Admiral’s Club, etc. The free booze alone will help generate a positive ROI.
- Ipod – Video, Nano, Shuffle, doesn’t matter, get one
- Bose Headphone – Not the cheap knockoffs either, get the real $299 ones. FYI if you have AmEx rewards points, you can buy them with 40k. On a L.A. to Atlanta trip, you would be amazed how much better you will feel with those noise-canceling miracles at work on your head.
In terms of music I have everything from Mozart to Beastie Boys on my Ipod.
However, we have a fan of TSW that happens to be one of those great undiscovered talents whose music I enjoy coveting.
Emily Deloach is a good friend and soon-to-be former coworker. Outside of the fact that she gets my jokes, she is one of my favorite people.
Here is one of my favorite songs of Emily’s Imaginary Love

That is the single thing I hate the most about traveling. Those trips where you wake up, you know you’re in a Marriott, and you have no idea where it is.
Have fun on the road, Kevins.
